While you may be well aware that Utah has one of the highest birth rates in the nation, you may not know that infertility will affect one in eight American couples. With numbers like these, it may not be too far of a stretch to imagine that you, or someone close to you, may be dealing with this painful--and sometimes incurable--experience.

Many of those who are victims of the devastating effects of infertility can experience any or all of the following:

-Depression; feelings of hopelessness or loss of interest
-Feelings of failure or incompetence
-Indirect anger
-Jealousy/Bitterness

The good news is that no matter what your circumstances, you do not have to battle it alone. Within recent years, there has been a shift towards the acceptance and understanding of the nature of this condition. Every day, more and more literature is being published and further research is conducted to forward the efforts of effective treatment.

Several months ago, SELF magazine published a courageous and inspiring article about the damaging effects infertility can have on couples who feel they are struggling alone.
It stressed the importance of having the courage to speak out about your experiences, not only to help heal others as well as yourself, but in the hopes that there will be an increased importance and emphasis on infertility as a disease. Without proper attention, it is unlikely that any research or improvements will be made to benefit those who are suffering. While there has been much development over recent years, there is still a long way to go.

Recently, Lisa Ling, a television journalist and reporter for The Oprah Winfrey Show, came forward with her own miscarriage and the feelings she experienced of loss, hopelessness and failure. She has since started her own website for women, entitled
"The Secret Society of Women"; a safe haven where women can anonymously join and post their own concerns about shortcomings and fears.

Other websites throughout the nation are also beginning to thrive, shedding some well deserved light on what once was (and still can feel as) a dark and lonely isolation.
The Kansas City Infertility Awareness site has been launched to support and inform women throughout their state and beyond. They will also be hosting their first event in April of this year.

RESOLVE is the nation's leading authority on infertility and it's effects and has recently opened a new chapter in Salt Lake City. They offer support groups, an infertility hotline, and a vast array of opportunities to assist or volunteer.

Whether you are experiencing infertility or know someone who is, don't be afraid to reach out. There are vast opportunities for education and support--and there are others who will benefit from your own counsel. Infertility is heart-wrenching, painful, and at times, completely unbearable. Yet, there are those who can understand and are willing to offer up what we sometimes cannot find for ourselves--hope.

RESOLVE Comes to Utah!!!

We are so excited to share this wonderful news; a RESOLVE chapter is being introduced in the Salt Lake City area. RESOLVE is the nation's official infertility association which offers information and support for women and men dealing with the various concerns that come with infertility--everything from diagnosis and management to surrogacy and adoption.

Amongst their many other projects, RESOLVE is passionate about educating the public about infertility. It is critical to them to promote access to care for those who need it and to bring men and women who may currently be experiencing infertility or who have in the past, together in a supportive and safe environment. To this end, a RESOLVE Salt-Lake City Peer-led Infertility Support group will be meeting on the second Wednesday of each month from 7 pm- 8:30 pm in the Salt Lake City Main Library - Conference Room D.

If you are looking for further ways to get involved, the RESOLVE Salt Lake City chapter is also offering some incredible volunteer opportunities for those who are passionate about serving those who suffer from infertility.
Local Area Coordinators are expected to volunteer four hours per month and would be responsible for answering emails and local phone calls for those seeking information about RESOLVE in their area.
Both Professional Outreach Coordinators and Helpline Volunteers would be expected to volunteer two to four hours per month.
Professional Outreach Coordinators would help RESOLVE build and maintain professional relationships in their local area and provide information by delivering fliers, hosing informational sessions, etc...
Helpline Volunteers do not need a dedicated phone line to volunteer-just their own words of inspiration and experience, however; training will be provided.

My little miracle:
One woman's experience with the EAGER study

My husband and I had already suffered through six months of infertility and two miscarriages when we were introduced to the EAGER program at the IHC hospital in Provo, Utah. While visiting my husband's father (who had recently undergone triple by-pass surgery) in the intensive care unit one day, we noticed a flier in the elevator that posed the question;

"Have you suffered a pregnancy loss? Are you EAGER to become pregnant again?"

On the bottom were several tabs that you could rip off with the program's contact information. Since my answer to both questions was a strong "yes" and "yes", I gratefully deposited the final tab into my pocket and decided to contact them the following day.

I didn't have any idea what I would be getting myself into, and at that point in time, I didn't feel I had the luxury to be apprehensive. All I knew was that at twenty-six years old, I was a young, healthy woman--a non-smoker, non-drinker, married to a supportive and loving spouse...who was also childless and becoming desperately unhappy.

As luck would have it, the program turned out to be relatively painless--after an introductory phone call, I was told that I qualified for the program and scheduled an appointment with one of their nurses.

During my first appointment--located in a room right on the maternity floor of the hospital--my nerves were quickly calmed by the friendly and professional manner in which the nurse conducted herself. She explained the program and it's procedures in detail, and I never felt pressured to join or answer any deeply personal questions. Once I looked over the written agreement, I signed my name and was ready to begin the journey.

As far as studies go, the EAGER program is relatively routine in nature--during those first few months, I tracked my periods and ovulation cycles with the help of a daily journal and a fertility monitor. Usually the monitors run for about $400.00 retail, yet everything was provided for free from the study. I was also asked to collect samples of my morning urine (to be frozen and then collected at my bi-monthly appointments), partake of the study medications once a day (the first was either an aspirin or a placebo, and the second, folic acid), and attend my appointments. I was even compensated for the mileage that accumulated while driving into the hospital!
Still, the most rewarding part of the experience at that point was the confidence that began to grow inside of me. The EAGER program was giving me the tools and support that I needed to possibly overcome my current situation.

For the first time in over two years, I began to sense a glimmer of hope.

What happened next is nothing short of miraculous in my eyes; after only three months with the Eager program (two period cycles) I became pregnant! I should also mention that as this was our third pregnancy, each of the first two only lasting up to about ten weeks, we had taken other precautions as well. My husband and I had both been working with a fertility specialist in the American Fork area to whom we attribute most of the credit. After being tested, our doctor had found that I have a rare, hereditary blood-clotting condition that caused my babies to expire after a few weeks. He prescribed Heparin (a blood thinner) which I was expected to inject into my stomach twice daily. Along with the aspirin (or placebo?) from the Eager program, something clicked, and my husband and I held our breath as we passed the dreaded ten-week mark...then fifteen...and then, at twenty weeks, we found out our baby was a little girl.

My pregnancy wasn't all roses--each trimester had it's downside. The first trimester was the most emotionally challenging, wondering if this baby was going to stay with me, whether or not he or she would be healthy...then there were the blood draws (twice a month with the Eager program and once a month with my doctor), the normal monthly doctor check-ups, and of course, the medications and heparin shots on top of nausea and fatigue.
The second trimester was better--I didn't have to keep collecting urine samples (a big headache when you are working full-time and already stumbling out of bed and running to the bathroom to stick your head in the toilet) and I was feeling less sick and more energized. I was also able to discontinue the heparin shots and instead was advised to just supplement a small baby aspirin along with my study medication as a just-in-case.
Then the third trimester brought on it's own "normal" pregnancy challenges--I had gained sixty pounds over the nine month period and was swollen, filled with aches and pains. I was tested for gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, but was found to be perfectly healthy. It occurred to me the week of my baby's due date
(I hadn't named her yet, as I was still afraid of a loss) that I may actually become a mother this time.

Indeed, I gave birth to my beautiful, healthy daughter one day after her due date. She was nine pounds, nine ounces, pink, and lovely with dark curls...and when they handed her to me for the first time I knew she was worth every nick, pinch, and ache that I had experienced. This summer she will turn two years old, and she has been the healthiest child I have ever known--in fact, in two years the worst we've dealt with is a small case of the sniffles!

There is no doubt in my mind that I would do it all over again in a heartbeat and we are eternally grateful for modern medicine and those who helped us along the way. If you think the EAGER program might be for you, I highly recommend that you seek out more information. Who knows? Your own miracle might be waiting for you.

We will be having a brainstorming meeting on July 27th (time and location TBD). Event...Success!!

It has been two weeks since we completed the first ever Utah Infertility Awareness Event and as we look back on it, we are thrilled with its obvious success. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make it what it was...and, thank you to all who attended--you made it worth every moment of planning.

As I (Kerstin Daynes) enumerate all that was great about April 24th, I realize that you deserve to know what is being celebrated...

1. We had fabulous media coverage!

The Salt Lake Tribune did an article...click here.
KSL, a local news station, interviewed me and my voice "appeared" during rush hour...click here.
I appeared on Friday night Fox 13 news and one of our committee members, Christine Anderson, was interviewed on Saturday morning by Fox 13 news. I can't find anything on their website to prove it, of course.

2. We had 170 people register with more than 20 more that emailed me after registration was closed. Husbands and wives came together, mothers came with daughters, friends came with friends. We had people from Utah, Idaho, and Nevada.

3. We had amazing food. Check out these delectable donuts we had...click here. Ooooh, they make my taste buds happy thinking about them.

4. We created quite the energy. It was phenomenal to sit in a room full of men and women, to look around, and to realize that each person there cared about infertility. Each person wanted to learn, to grow, to share, and to heal (or help someone heal). It was truly magnificent.

5. We impressed the doctors. The doctors were amazed by the turnout. Dr. William Keye (one of the presenters from the Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine) emailed me after and said:

"What an exciting day and a great symposium. I don't know how you and your committee put it together in such a short time, but it couldn't have been any better from my perspective. I was really pleased to see how involved the audience was and how receptive each of the speakers was to their questions. It was one of the best infertility seminars I have ever attended. I feel honored to have had the chance to speak and to be part of the conference."

6. Couples went away with greater hope. After the fact, I have heard from several men and women that they left the event with hope, with greater direction, and with many questions answered. Some couples have decided a new course of action or were validated in their current course of action. Success! That is exactly what we wanted.

What I learned:

1. An event like this was definitely needed.

2. There will be a 2nd Annual event in 2011. We will keep you posted!!

3. People want to talk about infertility.

4. Rent out a bigger venue. We will fill the house...guaranteed!

Thank you to all of you who attended and thank you to my committee for being absolutely wonderful. How great it is to celebrate such a success!

Directions to the Health Science Education Building (HSEB)

There will be free parking immediately south of the HSEB and in the parking garage immediately to the east.

Look for signs once you are on the University of Utah campus, as they will guide you directly to the HSEB.

From the I-80 Eastbound/ Salt Lake International Airport

Take I-80 East approximately 1.5 miles to the North Temple exit. Follow North Temple approximately 3 miles to State Street (one block beyond the Mormon Temple). Turn right on State Street, and go south 5 blocks to 400 South. Turn left, proceeding east on 400 South for approximately 1.5 miles until you reach the University of Utah campus. Proceed on 400 South until it begins to turn southward. Turn left onto Mario Capecchi Drive. Proceed to Fort Douglas Blvd and turn right. Then turn right on Medical Drive South. The second parking lot on your left is outside the HSEB.

From I-15 Northbound

Take the eastbound 600 South exit. At State Street turn left, proceeding 2 blocks north until you reach 400 South. Turn right, proceeding east on 400 South for approximately 2 miles until you reach the University of Utah campus. Proceed on 400 South until it begins to turn southward. Turn left onto Mario Capecchi Drive. Proceed to Fort Douglas Blvd and turn right. Then turn right on Medical Drive South. The second parking lot on your left is outside the HSEB.

From I-15 Southbound

Take the eastbound 600 North exit. At 300 West turn right, proceeding approximately 1.5 miles south until you reach 400 South. Turn left, proceeding east on 400 South for approximately 2 miles until you reach the University of Utah campus. Proceed on 400 South until it begins to turn southward. 'Exploring Family Building Options,' James S. Heiner, M.D.

Reproductive Care Center, Founder and PartnerBoard Certified OB/GYN and Reproductive Endocrinologist.

Dr. Heiner majored in Microbiology at BYU and studied Biochemistry at the University of Utah before earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) in 1985. He then completed a four year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UTMB. During this time he served as chief administrative resident and was honored with the “Good as Gold” award for superior patient care.

Dr. Heiner then completed a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Centers in Los Angeles completing the program in 1991. Dr Heiner served as a full time faculty member at UCLA until 1996. While there he served as the acting director of the Fellowship Program in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and was also the director of the fertility clinic and endoscopy surgical services for the Department of OB/GYN at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Heiner is the founder of the Reproductive Care Center, the first private practice infertility and IVF clinic in the state of Utah also serving patients from Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. The center opened in 1996, followed by the IVF service which began in April 1997.

'Naturally Enhancing Fertility,' Ahmad Hammoud, M.D.

Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine,Assistant Professor, Reproductive Endocrinology Division,Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology University of Utah Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Hammoud was trained in medicine at Saint Joseph University in Lebanon and completed his residency for Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University. He joined the staff of the Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine in July of 2005 as a fellow and has been involved in several outstanding research projects. After finishing his fellowship, he was appointed as an assistant professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is currently an active faculty member of the Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine. He and his wife and twin daughters enjoy Salt Lake City’s friendly environment.

'Dealing With the Emotional Aspects of Infertility,' William R. Keye, M.D.

Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine,Associate Professor, Reproductive Endocrinology Division,Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology University of Utah Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Keye received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Minnesota, University of Michigan and the University of California in San Francisco. He was an original member of the University of Utah’s IVF team and served as the Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility and IVF until 1990 when he left to serve in a similar capacity at the William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan and as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan. He has recently served on the staff of Reproductive Medicine Associates of Michigan. In November 2008 he returned to the University of Utah as a member of the Fertility Center team. Dr. Keye is Board Certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility. He and his wife have two children, two grandchildren, a grandcat and a granddog. He enjoys skiing, golf and spoiling his grandchildren.

'Understanding the Basics of Infertility,' Russell A. Foulk, M.D.

Utah Fertility Center, Board Certified OB/GYN and Reproductive Endocrinologist

He graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University with dual majors in microbiology and Asian studies, and dual minors in zoology and Korean. He finished at the top of his class while receiving his doctorate of medicine from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. During his post-graduate training in Ob/Gyn at U.C. Irvine Medical Center and his fellowship in reproductive medicine at U.C. San Francisco, he received a prestigious National Institute of Health grant, published numerous papers and presented before many national organizations. While on faculty at U.C. San Francisco, his research endeavors focused on implantation physiology, in which he shares two patents on unique immunologic proteins expressed by placental cells. He continues his research interests through multi-center investigative trials and basic research into the mechanisms of implantation and stem cells.

Dr. Foulk is an associate clinical professor at the University of Washington, Department of Ob/Gyn and at the University of Nevada, School of Medicine. He routinely teaches medical students, residents and general education courses. He has set up several IVF centers in Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Hawaii, Belgrade and Serbia. He has served for 8 years on the Board of Directors of the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society and recently served as the President of the Society.
